Ref Watch verdict on St Mirren star Alex Gogic overturned red vs Aberdeen

The St Mirren star went steaming in for a hefty challenge on Dons winger Shayden Morris and referee John Beaton flashed him the red card.

But after a lengthy VAR delay during which the whistler watched the replays several times, he changed the decision to a yellow card.

The Buddies were leading 1-0 at the time but conceded a Jamie McGrath equaliser despite keeping 11 men on the pitch.

But their joy returned late on when Richard Taylor headed home a winner to end Aberdeen’s unbeaten run.

The general consensus at the time and post-match was that the right decision had been reached after the VAR review.

Gogic did go flying in and his studs were showing, but he didn’t actually catch Morris and made full contract with the ball.

Former English referee Dermot Gallagher agrees with the Scottish pundits that a yellow card was warranted because of the dangerous nature of the challenge.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, he said: “I think this is a brilliant intervention of VAR because you look at that and you think the referee has seen him jump through the air.

“But he doesn’t get the man, he actually gets the ball. So the referee sends him off, he thinks it’s dangerous.

“But you see he clearly gets the ball.

“By the fact he makes the challenge like that, even though he gets the ball, I think it’s reckless.

Despite losing away at St Mirren, continuing their struggles at the SMISA Stadium over the years, one Aberdeen star insists they remain the better team out of the two.

Insisting it’s the sort of match they should be winning, Sivert Nilsen said: “We are really disappointed to not win.

“St Mirren are a very good team but I still think that they are a team we are better than and we should beat.

“But it’s more about the performance we need to look at.”
