On January 4, 2023, Hillis was vacationing with his family in Pensacola, Florida, when he noticed his children caught in a rip current. Without hesitation, he rushed into the water to rescue them. While he successfully saved his children, Hillis lost consciousness shortly after and was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. He was placed on a ventilator and treated for severe lung and kidney issues .

In February 2023, he was discharged from the hospital and expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, “I left the hospital with no worries and concerns and should make a 100% recovery. I’m a very lucky and blessed man. Yahweh has really blessed me and I am very thankful”

Peyton Hillis was born on January 21, 1986, in Conway, Arkansas. He played college football for the Arkansas Razorbacks before being drafted by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Over his seven-year NFL career, Hillis also played for the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New York Giants. He retired in 2015 after accumulating 2,832 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns .
