Denton, TX — May 15, 2025
A devastating fire broke out late Wednesday evening at The Timber Grille, Denton’s largest and most popular restaurant, claiming multiple lives and leaving the community in shock.
Fire crews responded to emergency calls around 9:45 PM after thick smoke and flames were seen pouring from the roof of the sprawling establishment located on South Elm Street. Witnesses reported hearing explosions, likely from the kitchen or gas lines, before the building was fully engulfed.
Tragically, among the confirmed fatalities are three well-known local athletes affiliated with Denton High School and the University of North Texas. Their names are being withheld pending notification of families. The athletes were reportedly attending a private team dinner at the time of the incident.
“This is a dark day for Denton,” said Fire Chief Raul Marquez at a press briefing early Thursday morning. “We’ve lost members of our community — young people with bright futures — in a senseless tragedy. Our hearts are with their families, friends, and teammates.”
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, though initial reports suggest it may have started in the kitchen area. Over 40 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, battling the intense flames for over three hours before bringing the blaze under control. At least 12 others were injured, with several transported to local hospitals for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation.
The Timber Grille, a landmark dining spot known for hosting community events and sports celebrations, is considered a total loss.
Counseling services are being made available at local schools and community centers as Denton mourns the loss. City officials have promised a full investigation and safety review of similar establishments.
