“BREAKING: Netflix Releases ‘The Underdog’ – Craig McRae Honored with statue in a Touching…

In a surprise release that has taken both sports fans and film enthusiasts by storm, Netflix has unveiled The Underdog, a heartfelt sports biopic chronicling the inspirational life and career of AFL legend Craig McRae. In a moment that perfectly encapsulated the emotion of the film, McRae was honored with a life-sized statue unveiled outside the MCG, immortalizing his enduring impact on the sport and the Collingwood Football Club.

An Unexpected Drop, a Powerful Message

Netflix chose an unconventional strategy for the release, with The Underdog dropping on the platform without prior notice. The film, directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Rachel Perkins, tells the story of McRae’s journey from a modest upbringing in South Australia to becoming one of the AFL’s most respected coaches and mentors.

Viewers are taken through his playing days with the Brisbane Lions, where he was a key part of their early 2000s dynasty, and follow his transition into coaching – culminating in his fairytale premiership win with Collingwood in 2023.

Statue Unveiled to Standing Ovation

Following the premiere at a packed Melbourne event attended by AFL stars past and present, a surprise statue unveiling ceremony was held outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The statue, capturing McRae in a signature coaching pose—clipboard in hand, eyes focused, mouth mid-instruction—was met with a standing ovation.

The tribute, commissioned by both the AFL and Netflix, is seen not only as a recognition of McRae’s achievements on and off the field, but also a celebration of humility, resilience, and leadership.

Community and Critics Praise the Film

Early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Critics are praising the film’s balance of emotional depth and sporting drama, with many highlighting the performance of actor Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), who portrays McRae with “quiet charisma and steely resolve.” Real-life footage is woven throughout the dramatization, lending authenticity to key moments.

The AFL community has also voiced its admiration. “It’s not just a story about footy—it’s about character, perseverance, and what it means to lead,” said Collingwood captain Darcy Moore.

Legacy Cemented

For McRae, the honor is deeply personal. Speaking at the unveiling, he said, “I never played or coached for statues or headlines. I just wanted to help people be better – on the field and off it. If this film helps inspire someone else to chase their dreams, then it’s done its job.”

The Underdog is now streaming globally on Netflix.
