Sarasota, FL — May 26, 2025 — A shocking act of violence unfolded Sunday evening at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida, where three baseball players were shot during a team practice session.
According to the Sarasota Police Department, the incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. during what was described as a routine training session. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots followed by chaos as players and staff scrambled for cover. Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes.
Authorities have confirmed that three players were struck by gunfire. Their names have not yet been released pending family notification. All three were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where two are reported to be in stable condition, while one remains in critical condition.
“This is a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said Police Chief Brandon Carmichael during a late-night press conference. “We are working diligently to determine the motive and identify those responsible.”
The stadium, which serves as the spring training home for the Baltimore Orioles, was immediately locked down. No suspects have been apprehended, and investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Team officials expressed shock and sorrow in a brief statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our players and their families at this time. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement,” the statement read.
The Orioles organization has suspended all team activities until further notice. Fans and community members have already begun placing flowers and notes at the stadium gates.
