The Edmonton Oilers have made a major move to secure their future, announcing that superstar forward Leon Draisaitl has signed an eight-year contract extension with the team. The deal is reportedly worth $96 million, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $12 million.
Draisaitl, one of the NHL’s most dynamic playmakers, has been a cornerstone of the Oilers’ offense alongside captain Connor McDavid. The German-born forward is coming off another dominant season, where he tallied over 100 points and showcased his elite vision, scoring touch, and power-play prowess.
Oilers General Manager Ken Holland expressed excitement about locking down one of the franchise’s key pieces: “Leon is a world-class player who continues to elevate his game. His commitment to Edmonton and our team culture is invaluable. This contract is a testament to what he means to our organization.”
Originally drafted third overall by Edmonton in 2014, Draisaitl has blossomed into one of the NHL’s most consistent offensive threats. He won the Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy in 2020 and has consistently ranked among the league leaders in scoring since then.
With this extension, the Oilers solidify their core for years to come, as Draisaitl and McDavid remain under contract deep into the decade—a promising sign for fans hoping to see the franchise lift the Stanley Cup once again.
