In a tragic and unexpected natural disaster, Florida State Seminoles head football coach Mike Norvell and his family have reportedly lost their lives following a powerful earthquake that struck the region during a severe storm late Friday evening.
According to early reports from emergency management officials, the earthquake, registering a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, occurred amidst an already dangerous weather system that had prompted flood warnings and high wind advisories across northern Florida. The rare seismic activity further destabilized structures already weakened by the storm, leading to widespread destruction and chaos.
Coach Norvell, 43, had been a beloved leader of the Florida State football program since 2019, revitalizing the team and leading them to national prominence in recent seasons. He was at home with his wife, Maria, and their daughter when the quake struck. Authorities confirmed that the Norvell residence collapsed shortly after the tremors began.
FSU President Richard McCullough released a brief statement:
“We are devastated beyond words. Mike was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a father figure to many of our players, and a cherished member of the FSU community. Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved the Norvell family.”
Rescue and emergency crews are continuing to respond to multiple affected areas, as aftershocks and storm conditions complicate search efforts.
The Florida Governor has declared a state of emergency and has requested federal assistance. University officials have also canceled all athletic activities and classes for the upcoming week as the campus community mourns.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
