In a powerful display of compassion and community leadership, University of Kentucky basketball standout Otega Oweh has announced a $7.5 million personal investment to convert a historic Lexington estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The 21-year-old rising star revealed the plans during an emotional press conference held on Friday morning, standing on the steps of the soon-to-be-transformed property. The shelter, named “Oweh House of Hope,” will provide transitional housing, counseling services, educational support, and job training programs for at-risk youth between the ages of 14 and 21.
“I’ve been blessed with so many opportunities,” Oweh said. “This is about using what I have to give someone else a chance. No kid should ever have to wonder where they’re sleeping at night.”
Construction is slated to begin this summer, with the facility expected to open its doors by early 2026. Local leaders and nonprofits have already pledged support, calling the move “a game-changer” for the Lexington community.
Oweh, who transferred to Kentucky in 2024 and quickly became a fan favorite for his heart and hustle on and off the court, said this initiative is just the beginning of what he hopes will become a larger network of youth-focused programs throughout the region.
The basketball world and broader public have already responded with admiration, hailing Oweh as more than just an athlete — but a role model of action and hope.
