Netflix has officially announced the release date of “The UnderDog,” a powerful new sports documentary chronicling the life, legacy, and battles of Wisconsin Badgers football legend Montee Ball. Slated to premiere globally on June 21, 2025, the film promises an unfiltered look at Ball’s meteoric rise to college football stardom, his struggles with addiction, and his road to redemption.
Produced in partnership with ESPN Films and directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay, The UnderDog dives deep into Ball’s record-shattering career at the University of Wisconsin, his brief NFL tenure, and his candid fight with personal demons post-football.
Montee Ball, once a Heisman finalist and NCAA touchdown record holder, said in a statement, “This isn’t just my story—it’s the story of everyone who’s ever been told they can’t make it back. I hope it inspires others to find strength in their struggles.”
The documentary features never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews with former teammates, coaches, and mental health advocates, and aims to spark a larger conversation around mental health in sports.
