In a heartfelt move that’s capturing national attention, Seattle Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. has announced a $9.5 million personal investment to convert a historic estate in downtown Tacoma into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
Griffey, known as much for his community involvement as for his baseball legacy, revealed the project aims to provide housing, mental health services, education support, and job training to unhoused youth between the ages of 14 and 24.
“This is more than a shelter—it’s a foundation for a better future,” Griffey said during a press conference. “Every young person deserves a safe place to sleep and the chance to dream.”
The shelter, to be named “The Junior House”, is expected to open in Spring 2026 and will house up to 60 residents at a time. Local leaders have praised the initiative as a model for public-private partnership in addressing homelessness.
