Steve Kerr to Step Down as Golden State Warriors Head Coach After 2024-25 Season
In a surprising turn of events, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has announced that he will be stepping down following the conclusion of the 2024-25 NBA season. Kerr, who has been at the helm since 2014, leaves behind a legacy of excellence, leadership, and transformation for one of the NBA’s most storied franchises.
Kerr, 59, made the announcement in a press conference early Monday morning, stating that it was time for a new chapter, both for himself and for the Warriors. “This journey has been the honor of a lifetime,” Kerr said. “But after 11 years, I feel it’s the right moment for a fresh voice to lead this team.”
Under Kerr’s guidance, the Warriors won four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022) and made six NBA Finals appearances. He helped usher in a new era of basketball, emphasizing ball movement, pace, and three-point shooting, led by stars like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. praised Kerr’s impact, calling him “a foundational figure in our franchise’s history” and noting that the organization will begin a thorough search for his successor. “Steve set a standard that goes beyond wins and titles. He brought unity, vision, and heart to everything we did,” said Dunleavy.
As the Warriors begin planning for the future, questions remain about the direction of the team in a rapidly evolving Western Conference. Meanwhile, Kerr did not rule out coaching in the future, but emphasized that he’s looking forward to spending more time with family and exploring new opportunities.
Fans and players alike are expected to honor Kerr throughout his final season, which now takes on new meaning as a farewell tour for one of the NBA’s most respected figures.
