In an extraordinary act of generosity and community commitment, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes has invested $3.6 million of his personal funds to convert a historic Vancouver residence into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.

The 25-year-old NHL All-Star announced the initiative this morning in partnership with local non-profit Youth Haven BC, which will operate the shelter. The facility—currently under renovation—will provide temporary housing, mental health services, job training, and education support for up to 40 at-risk youth at a time.

“Vancouver has given me so much, both as a player and as a person,” Hughes said during a press conference. “I’ve seen the struggles young people face on these streets, and I wanted to do something that could truly make a difference.”

The shelter, named “Hughes House,” is expected to open later this year and will be located in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. The three-story home will feature private rooms, a kitchen staffed by volunteers, counseling offices, and a recreation space.

Community leaders and Canucks teammates praised Hughes for using his platform and resources to address Vancouver’s escalating youth homelessness crisis.

“Quinn’s heart is as big as his talent,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “This is the kind of leadership we need—not just on the ice, but in our neighborhoods.”

The announcement has already sparked a wave of support across social media, with fans, local businesses, and fellow athletes pledging donations and volunteering services to the new shelter.
