In a move that’s sure to stir excitement among Hoosier fans, the Indiana University athletics department has officially appointed former professional basketball star and IU legend Steve Alford as the new head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball team.
The announcement was confirmed early Monday morning by IU Athletic Director Scott Dolson, who praised Alford’s extensive coaching experience and deep-rooted connection to the program. “Steve understands what it means to wear the cream and crimson. He brings not only decades of coaching success but also a passion for Indiana basketball that is unmatched,” Dolson said.
Alford, a native of New Castle, Indiana, starred for the Hoosiers from 1983 to 1987 under legendary coach Bob Knight, leading the team to a national championship in 1987. He went on to play in the NBA before transitioning into a successful coaching career, with prior stints at New Mexico, UCLA, and most recently Nevada.
In his first statement as head coach, Alford said, “Coming back to Indiana is a dream fulfilled. This program shaped me into the man I am today, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead it forward.”
