In a groundbreaking crossover from sports to storytelling, former basketball phenom Eric Laimbeer Jr. has inked a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix for the production of “Hoops to Hollywood,” a biographical film chronicling his tumultuous yet inspiring journey from the fringes of professional basketball to becoming a respected figure in the entertainment industry.
The film, which has already generated significant buzz in both Hollywood and sports circles, will follow Laimbeer Jr.’s early years as the son of NBA legend Bill Laimbeer, his battle to break free from his father’s shadow, and the emotional rollercoaster of his brief stint in the NBA before finding his true calling off the court.
“Hoops to Hollywood isn’t just about basketball — it’s about identity, redemption, and the courage to pivot when your dreams take a detour,” said Laimbeer Jr. in a press statement. “I’m honored to partner with Netflix to bring this personal story to life, not just for fans of the game, but for anyone who’s ever felt lost and found their way back.”
Sources close to the production have confirmed that the film will be executive produced by Maverick Carter and LeBron James under the SpringHill Company banner, known for blending powerful storytelling with cultural impact. Negotiations are reportedly underway with a major A-list actor to portray the older Laimbeer Jr., while a rising young star is expected to play the athlete during his early career struggles.
Laimbeer Jr.’s path has been anything but conventional. Despite being drafted in the second round in 2011, his NBA career was cut short due to recurring injuries and what he has openly described as “a crisis of passion.” After bouncing between international leagues and G-League teams, he walked away from the game and turned to screenwriting — a pivot that eventually led him to success behind the scenes in television and film development.
“Eric’s story is raw, real, and ultimately uplifting,” said Netflix’s Head of Film, Ori Marmur. “This film will resonate with viewers who appreciate the grit behind greatness and the power of reinvention.”
Production for Hoops to Hollywood is set to begin in early 2026, with a global release expected later that year.
