Minneapolis, MN — May 18, 2025
In an unprecedented moment of pride and celebration, the University of Minnesota Marching Band has officially been crowned the No. 1 marching band in the world, according to global performance rankings verified by ESPN Arts & Performance Division.
The announcement was made earlier this week following the World Collegiate Marching Band Championship, held in Vienna, Austria. With thousands in attendance and millions watching via livestream, the Minnesota Marching Band stunned audiences with their precision, musical excellence, and breathtaking visual formations — earning them the top global honor and solidifying their status as an elite powerhouse in collegiate performance.
Unmatched Performance, Unshakable Pride
The University of Minnesota Marching Band, affectionately known as “The Pride of Minnesota,” took center stage with a show themed “Echoes of America”, blending intricate choreography, multimedia visuals, and a genre-spanning musical journey through American history. Their standout moments included a heartfelt tribute to military veterans, a soaring arrangement of Prince’s Purple Rain, and a perfectly synchronized marching sequence that drew roaring applause from the judges.
“It was nothing short of magical,” said Julian Ramirez, chief judge and internationally acclaimed band director. “The technical difficulty, emotional expression, and unity this band showcased… it was as if every note was telling a story.”
The band edged out stiff competition from elite groups including Ohio State University, Japan’s Kyoto Wind Ensemble, and the Royal British College of Music, earning a near-perfect score of 98.7.
A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in 1892, the University of Minnesota Marching Band has long been a cornerstone of school spirit and artistic innovation. With over 300 members, the band performs at all home football games and major university events, drawing praise for their iconic pregame routines and signature “Block M” formation.
“This title is the result of countless hours of hard work, sacrifice, and passion,” said Dr. Betsy McCann, the band’s director and the first female marching band director in Big Ten history. “Our students don’t just march—they inspire. They represent everything great about this university, this state, and this country.”
