Gregg Popovich Denounces Reports of Transition to “El Jefe” Role with Spurs
San Antonio, TX – May 5, 2025
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich addressed swirling rumors on Monday regarding his alleged transition into a front office role, firmly denouncing the idea that he’s stepping away from coaching to become “El Jefe” of the franchise.
In his usual no-nonsense tone, Popovich pushed back on speculation that he was preparing to relinquish his duties on the bench in favor of an executive title.
“Let me be clear—I’m not going anywhere,” Popovich stated during a press conference ahead of offseason workouts. “I don’t know where this ‘El Jefe’ nonsense started, but I’ve got a team to coach and young guys to develop. That’s where my focus is.”
The rumors intensified last week after an internal Spurs memo leaked referring to Popovich as “El Jefe,” sparking speculation of a front office transition. But the 76-year-old five-time NBA champion coach dismissed the nickname as an “inside joke” and insisted he remains committed to coaching, particularly in guiding rising star Victor Wembanyama and the team’s young core.
“I might be old, cranky, and more gray than ever, but I’m still in this,” Popovich said. “I didn’t spend decades building this culture just to watch from a glass office upstairs.”
Spurs general manager Brian Wright also chimed in to clarify the organization’s stance: “Coach Popovich continues to lead our team on the court. Any talk of a new role is purely speculative.”
Popovich signed a five-year extension in 2023, signaling his intent to remain with the team in an active capacity.
For now, fans can rest assured that Popovich, clipboard in hand, will continue to patrol the sidelines—still the voice, face, and fire of Spurs basketball.
